Living like a princess for a night in Portugal

Portugal's Algarve coast is a wonderful destination for those seeking some of the best beaches in Southern Europe, but it also offers fascinating and authentic places to stay. Only 10km from Faro airport, it's an easy transfer to the wonderful Palacio de Estoi. Only a few years ago, it was a semi-ruin, but has now been restored to its former grandeur and is now a small luxury hotel. From the moment you park up in front of the main building with its distinctive pink colour, you get the feeling that your stay is going to be special.

A contemporary wing was constructed in 2009, and somehow gels well alongside the old building. The 63 guest rooms are spacious with floor to ceiling terrace door windows and a minimalist look and feel. The rooms have all you'd expect, such as slippers; a fridge, and free Wi-Fi. The bathroom is large, with some lovely products by Portuguese perfumery Castelbel of Porto.

The main building is what staying here is all about though. This Baroque 18th century palace was modelled on Portuguese Royal residences, and is very extravagant. There are some beautiful public spaces, with drawing rooms that look out over the gardens.

The restaurant has a charming terrace which is a beautiful setting for summer evening meals. The sun sets just over the hills and I couldn't stop taking photos of the building as it changed colour as the sun started to go down. Back to the restaurant though, and as you'd expect for the Algarve, there is plenty of local fish and seafood on the menu, but I decided on a lamb dish, which was fantastic. I'd recommend eating here even though it's also possible to wander into town to eat at the local restaurant too. Breakfast is also fabulous at the hotel, and I can pretty much guarantee that you won't need any lunch - fruit, a continental style offering, with hot options and doughnuts on the side really sets you up for the day!

If you decide to spend the day relaxing at the palace (and I suggest you do!), the pool is a wonderful place to do just that. Cooling off in the water, while gazing up at the wonderful architecture or sitting under a parasol watching the swifts fly down and take a drink from the pool.

If you're not familiar with the term Pousada, they are traditional or historical hotels in Portugal. I've stayed in many over the years, but this is hands down one of my favourites. So if you want to feel like a prince or princess for the night - this is the place!
