Travel Photo Friday: Sunny Greece

Image
The Greek island of Skyros is so picturesque that I really struggled to pick one photo to feature - I could have used a whole lot more, but to me, this one sums up what the Greek islands are all about. Baking heat; stunning scenery and beautiful islands in the distance longing to be explored!  If you've got a top tip for a particular Greek island you've enjoyed visiting, I'd love to hear all about it!

Travel Photo Friday: The incredible Acropolis

Image
Greece is a country I have only recently started discovering and I have to say it has blown me away on several occasions! The islands are stunning, Athens is crazy but fantastic, and the Acropolis.....wow. I visited in September when the temperatures were still high, but it didn't stop me enjoying my visit. I took the shot above from one of the hills on the ancient site, and love how the green trees contrast with the creamy white of the acropolis. The marble can really start to hurt your eyes after a while, such is the reflection in the summer sun, so my top tip would be to go early, and try to beat the crowds. Also take your own water and food if you're going to be there over lunchtime - the stalls inside are expensive. It takes a good four hours to go round, but you could happily spend all day wandering around the site.

A perfect sightseeing base in Athens

Image
Athens is a city full of colour; smells, sights and sounds - and nowhere will you see more colour than at the very funky Fresh Hotel! The neon touches throughout the hotel brighten up the perfect sightseeing base for your trip. It's situated just ten minutes from Monastiraki metro station in the heart of Athens.  There are 133 rooms, and while small, they have everything you need - high speed internet connection; air con; a small balcony; a tv, and lovely products in the bathroom. Despite being in such a central location, the rooms also very quiet at night. Breakfast is served on the first floor, with everything from a continental breakfast, to a full English to local Greek cakes - yummy. The perfect way to fill up before a busy day exploring everything the city has to offer! One of the high points of the hotel is on the top floor. There is a small pool which provides the perfect place to cool down after a busy day of sightseeing in this bustling city! ...

Santorini Sun

Image
If you're looking for something a bit different, and don't fancy staying in a hotel, then I have found a different style of accommodation that may suit you. Andronis luxury suites is a multi-villa property which cascades down the side of the Greek island of Santorini. The suites are in Oia Village, which is one of the most traditional villages on Santorini island. The rooms are beautifully designed 'cave rooms', which make the most of the fact the suites tumble down the island's steep slopes. There are also breathtaking views from the patios. Although this is not a hotel, the hospitality is fantastic. The staff will help you plan trips around the island, and will give you great recommendations for restaurants outside the village. Top tip: the island can be very busy during the peak summer months, so if you prefer it a little quieter, then it could be an idea to go in late May, early June or September.

Value for money week - Acropylis views in Athens

Image
I continue value for money week by heading to Greece and featuring a hotel that won first place in the top 25 trendiest hotels in Greece in the Travelers' Choice Awards 2012. The Fresh Hotel has 133 bedrooms and is located in the heart of Athens, within walking distance of the museums and the Acropolis. The rooms are minimalist, and perfect for both business and leisure travellers. They have comfortable beds, and ultra-modern bathrooms with free toiletries. Also included in the rooms rate is a breakfast buffet, with a selection of hot foods. One of the highlights of this hotel is the stunning roof-top bar, which has panoramic views of Athens at night (see photo below). Many guests say it's nice enough to tempt you not to leave the hotel at all! There is also a pool on the roof which is open during the summer months. The hotel also has a small gym and sauna - again features you may not expect at a low price. There are many hotels to choo...

A cottage with views - the Greek islands

Image
Staying in a villa on holiday gives you the freedom to do what you want; when you want, and if you fancy Greece as a destination, I have found a stunner! This pretty little two bedroom cottage stole my heart when I came across it, and if you were going to the Greek islands, don't you agree this would be the perfect place to stay? Having had a look at lots of private rental accommodation in Greece, it seems unusual to find places on the beach, and you have to admit its location alone is stunning. Alonissos is the sleepiest of the four Sporades islands in the Aegean, and while there is no airport on the island, you can fly into Skiathos and take a ferry from there (approximately two hours fifteen minutes). The extra travel time is well worth it, and while Sea Horse Cottage was once a fisherman's cottage, it is now a comfortable two bedroom retreat. Although the accommodation is very comfortable, the outside space and views are what you come for. Just imag...
