Igloo fun in Lapland

As Valentine's Day approaches, I decided to look for a romantic place to stay with a difference. I certainly found that when I came across the Kakslauttanen Igloo Village, in Finland. It's located in the Northern part of the country, above the arctic circle, and is being touted as one of the most romantic getaways in the world. It's located 35km away from Ivalo airport (there are regular flights from Helsinki to Ivalo), and a bus transfer takes you straight to the hotel.

While there is a hotel option with lovely log cabins, guests have a unique option from December/January until April - you can stay in glass or snow igloos - what a unique experience! The glass igloo is built from a special thermal glass, and the temperature inside the igloo stays at a normal level. It is equipped with a toilet and luxury beds, and provides a one of a kind opportunity to see millions of stars in the clear sky.

The other option is to stay in a snow igloo, where the temperature is between -3 and -6 degrees centigrade. Don't worry, wool socks and a hood are provided and the advice is to wear a layer of thermal underwear, and 'exercise a little' before getting into your sleeping bag. Now do you see how romantic this could be - ha ha!

There's plenty to do in this part of the world, from ski-ing, to winter safaris. Another reason to visit is the chance to see the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), one of the most amazing natural phenomena. They are visible from late August till late April; and with no light pollution, it's one of the most perfect places to view the magnificent lights. So you won't miss them, a bell rings to alert you every time some Northern Lights are visible! For more information on this unique place, click here for the official website.
