Friday's Lightbulb: Mérida, Mexico

Image
I decided to feature Mérida because it's the American Capital of Culture in 2017, and while there are a series of large scale events taking place throughout the year, I didn't know too much about it, so decided to do some research! While it's not one of those undiscovered places, it's certainly not a tourist trap, so if you want to escape the crowds in places like Cancun, then this might be a part of Mexico you'll love. Mérida is the cultural capital of the Yucatán Peninsula, and ranks among the safest places in Mexico. The town is steeped in colonial history, and is a great place to start an adventure around the rest of the state. As well as taking in plenty of culture, the bonus is that the cost of food and hotels are very reasonable too.  Once you've had your fill of culture, then a day trip to the caves of the Yucatán is not to be missed. This peninsula is made of porous limestone, so there are no rivers or lakes above ground...instead they...

The museum with a difference

Image
I'm always looking for unusual things to feature on my blog, and today is certainly something very different! If you enjoy museums, then this could be for you......if you also enjoy diving or snorkelling, then it's definitely going to interest you! In the clear waters off Cancun, is a museum with a difference. It consists of 450 life sized sculptures.  The museum is not only for the benefit of visitors - it will also hopefully promote the growth of new coral, which will form on the sculpture...

A quirky colourful find in Mexico City

Image
Zona Rosa is a neighbourhood in Mexico City which is known for its shopping and nightlife. It's located to the west of the historic centre of Mexico City itself and has a real bohemian feel about it. There are charming squares, beautiful gardens - all very cosmopolitan.  Room Mate Valentina is a beautifully designed, and inexpensive hotel, and is the perfect base from which to explore.  There are 62 funky rooms, which are also very large. They all have flat screen televisions, satellite TV, and ipod stations. There is free high speed internet at the hotel, and a Spanish style breakfast buffet which is open until 12pm daily - a nice touch if you've had a bit of a late night! Speaking of late nights, the neighbourhood is a great place to party at the weekend, and although the rooms are sound-proofed, you may want to ask for a room that doesn't face the street. You can rent bikes from the front desk (less than USD$5 per day) which is a nice touch and a gr...
